Mary Adshead (1904–1995) was a 20th century painter, illustrator and mural artist. Throughout her career she produced many public space murals, paintings and illustrated children’s books, often collaborating with her husband and fellow artist Stephen Bone, son of the acclaimed draughtsman Muirhead Bone.

The Hunterian and the University of Glasgow's Archives and Special Collections houses many original design plans and preliminary sketches for murals produced by Adshead.

By investigating objects from all three artists alongside pieces of the Adshead Archive held in the Universities Archives and Special Collections, Tui will discuss the ties between artist's families and the complications in categorising what makes an 'artwork' and what belongs in a gallery's collection. By focusing on the work of Mary Adshead, this presentation will celebrate the history of mural art and the often-underrepresented role of women within this artform.

The Friday Focus talk programme features a different speaker each week, sharing a deeper insight into our exhibitions and collections, and work going on behind the scenes at The Hunterian. We hold the talks every Friday at 1pm online over Zoom. Talks are approximately 20 minutes long with time for questions afterwards.
