In this public event, we will hear from key voices within the University of Glasgow on major challenge-led research and impact, and some of the social science ethical issues that it raises.

Speakers:

Professor Sarah Armstrong’s research focuses on prisons, prisoners and criminal justice exploring questions about the governance, organisation, representation and experiences of punishment. A key strand of her research is on policy as a site and source of culture, and the specific bureaucratic qualities and logics that arise in penal institutions. Her current research is on death in custody with a research team that includes family members affected by it.

Professor Jo Ferrie’s research is dedicated to the enhancement of learning and teaching principally through improving access to methods and skill training. She is known for her contribution to, and informing and influencing Academic Practice. She was appointed Associate Dean of Skill and Method in 2023 and holds the award of Principal Fellow of RET, recognised for Excellence in Teaching. Jo publishes around better methods teaching and the realisation of human rights through participatory methodologies and budgets.

Discussant:

Dr. Michael L. Frazer is a political theorist whose research on canonical moral and political philosophy focuses on its relevance for contemporary ethics, politics, and social science. He is the author of "The Enlightenment of Sympathy: Justice and the Moral Sentiments in the Eighteenth Century and Today’"(Oxford University Press, 2010), as well as articles in the American Political Science Review, Perspectives on Politics, Political Theory, The Review of Politics, and other journals. Before arriving at Glasgow, Dr. Frazer received his BA from Yale University, his PhD from Princeton, and  has previously held positions at UEA, Brown and Harvard.

Moderator: 

Dr. Rebecca Tapscott is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Glasgow. She runs two major research projects, one on authoritarianism and political violence in low capacity states, and another on the politics of research ethics in the social sciences. She is a member of the UK Young Academy and convenor of the Ethics Governance Network. She also serves as an Associate Editor at Research Ethics, reviews editor for Civil Wars, and an editorial board member for International Studies Review
