The Watermelon Woman is a stand out of the New Queer Cinema movement of the 90s. Director Cheryl Dunye plays a video store worker and filmmaker who attempts to discover the story around a 1930s Hollywood star only known as the Watermelon Woman. Video camera footage of the film within the film documents Cheryl's journey to restore a piece of Black Lesbian cinema history.
The Criterion Collection says: "Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen, introducing an important voice in American cinema."
