BBC and Black Britain South Asians at the BBC 1930S-1940S
This talk is based on new research from Dr Kaul's forthcoming book, The BBC and India. The BBC played an important role in broadcasting about, and to, India, especially during the Second World War, and the British Raj was keen to utilise the BBC in its imperial strategies. A number of Indians came to work for the BBC in London during the war as well as in the subcontinent. Many stayed on after the war, whilst some returned to help further develop broadcasting in India and Pakistan after Independence in 1947.

This talk is based on new and exciting research from my book, The BBC and India (OUP, Oxford 2024 forthcoming). As I argue, the BBC played an important role in broadcasting about India and broadcasting to her. Radio was a key instrument in government politics and propaganda especially during the Second World War, and the British Raj was keen to utilise the BBC in its imperial strategies. A number of Indians came to work for the BBC in London during the war as well as in the subcontinent. Many stayed on after the war, whilst some returned to help further develop broadcasting in India and Pakistan after Independence in 1947.
