Short Description
This course aims to provide veterinary nurses with the knowledge and skills to create an effective learning environment for individuals within the veterinary nursing profession. Students will analyse strategic learning theories and models of teaching in order to synthesise knowledge and adapt one's own teaching practice. The course will cover delivery of teaching, evaluation of competencies, and self-reflection allowing for research to be utilised and adapted to create a teaching, learning and assessment plan. Individuals will also cover key transferable skills which will influence teaching practice. A proportion of the course will focus on the teaching and assessment of clinical skills, and how it can be practically implemented and utilised within one's own practice, and in an academic environment.

Assessment
Create a teaching plan and evaluation, and design a suitable assessment to examine student knowledge and understanding and/or competency in a practical skill (20%).
Write a critically reflective narrative to justify your selection of teaching and assessment methods in summative assessment 1, making reference to the relevant theories and literature in learning, teaching and assessment (3000 words) (70%).

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

Course Aims
This course aims to enable veterinary nurses to:
■ Analyse different learning models and develop knowledge and understanding of how this can be applied to teaching and assessment practice.
■ Develop knowledge and understanding of how to deliver content to facilitate individual learning requirements.
■ Use a variety of resources and learning technologies to enhance teaching and assessment to complement understanding
■ Review methods of assessment and develop an understanding of how to incorporate these within professional teaching practice.
■ Develop their ability to critique the efficacy of specific teaching methods, and evaluate one's own teaching practice and assess effectiveness.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Identify and critically discuss theories of learning, teaching and assessment, relevant to learning within veterinary nursing.
■ Critically discuss with reference to the embedded literature, good practice in teaching and assessment.
■ Construct teaching plans, identify and critically discuss your teaching and assessment resources to facilitate learning, and suitable tools to evaluate these.
■ Design an assessment, incorporating appropriate methods that assesses performance, and reflect on how feedback might be provided.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
