Short Description

This course explores various forms of writing for performance taught by a theatre practitioner.

Ten seminars comprising lecture and group discussion

Requirements of Entry

Standard entry to Masters at College level.

Assessment

1 x 20-minute play (weighted at 70%)

1x 1500 word practice reflection (weighted at 30%).

 

Note that for students to complete this course successfully, the following minimum requirements must be met: submission of two assignments; satisfactory attendance at classes - at least 90% of scheduled activities; and, satisfactory participation in classes - prescribed reading; active participation in workshop sessions.

Course Aims

The course aims to:
acquaint the students with the basics of writing for performance;
explore the various genres possible for writing for the stage; and,
examine the work of Scottish and international playwrights.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to:
demonstrate a comprehensive practical and critical understanding of the work of a playwright;
demonstrate an ability to assess how a performance piece will work on stage; and,
demonstrate an ability to revise from critical feedback regarding a work-in-progress showing.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
