Written work not to exceed 5,000 words, usually in the form of one essay of 3,500-5,000 words.

Course Aims

To enable students to gain an in-depth knowledge of a special subject relating to their particular field of interest and to their chosen research topic.

Foster independent study, under the guidance of regular meetings with an appropriate tutor/s/
To develop a critical awareness of primary sources and secondary materials in any area of Scottish and Celtic Studies

To enable students to study on an individual basis (or in very small groups) with a practising researcher in their chosen topic

To provide an opportunity to conduct research on a subject which may lead to a further research at a more advanced level

To develop critical reading and writing skills

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

■ develop specialist knowledge and understanding of specific Scottish and Celtic Studies topics

■ develop, through ongoing discussion and writing, a critical understanding of primary sources and secondary materials relevant to the chosen disciplinary, multi-disciplinary or interdisciplinary subject/topic

■ evaluate alternative concepts, methodologies and interpretations

■ attain a level of expertise and knowledge which will enable further research at an advanced level

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment.
