Short Description

This course prepares students to write an undergraduate dissertation in politics and international relations. It familiarises them with the expectations and requirements of the dissertation and exposes them to resources available to guide them in the project. They submit a proposed topic for the dissertation that is required for them to be assigned a formal supervisor for the dissertation project. This course is prerequisite to enrolment in the dissertation.

Requirements of Entry

Entry to Honours Politics or International Relations requires a grade point average of 12 (Grade C) over Politics 2A and Politics 2B as a first attempt.

Assessment

1) Quizzes auto-graded as pass/fail via Moodle. Unlimited re-take opportunities would be available.

(2) Topic proposals graded as "acceptable" or "not acceptable." Unlimited re-submission opportunities would be available.

Course Aims

The course aims to familiarise students with the expectations and requirements of the dissertation as well as make students aware of the resources available for the dissertation. The course will assist students to write and submit a proposed dissertation topic which in turn can facilitate the matching of students to supervisors. Overall, the course aims to ensure all honours students are prepared to commence work on their dissertation at the beginning of their fourth year.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

(1) Understand the expectations and requirements of the dissertation.

(2) Understand about resources available for the dissertation.

(3) Demonstrate knowledge of how to develop and propose a topic for the dissertation.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
