Short Description

In this practice-based course students will be assigned to two Practice Learning Experiences (PLEs) in a variety of health and social care settings. In accordance with regulatory standards for nurse education and training Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (NMC, 2018), student performance will be supported and assessed by nominated Practice Supervisors/Assessors and Academic Assessors. In PLE 3, students will also work closely with a nominated Practice Supervisor who will direct and guide their participation in care working towards the independent level. Students will adhere to the "The Code. Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates" (NMC, 2018) and local policies and procedures.

Timetable

PLE 3 consists of 12-weeks of practice divided into two placements: PLE 3a (6 weeks) and PLE 3b (6 weeks).

Requirements of Entry

To enter Year 3 of the BN (Hons) programme, students must have achieved a minimum of Grade D for all components of summative assessment including practice learning and achieved all the NMC platforms and proficiencies required for Year 2.

Assessment

The summative assessment process is in accordance with the regulatory standards for nurse education and training Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018). During each placement in PLE 3, students will work closely with a Practice Supervisor who will provide guidance and direction. The Practice Supervisor will work closely with a nominated Practice Assessor. Together, the Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor will discuss the student's performance in relation to each of the platform proficiencies. The outcome of this assessment will be documented in the student's Scottish Practice Assessment Document (PAD) before being reviewed and confirmed by the student's Academic Assessor.

Course Aims

PLE 3 provides an opportunity for students to participate in care at an independent level. This means that students will work closely with a nominated Practice Supervisor who will direct and guide them. Through this guided participation in care, students will be able to demonstrate delivery of safe, effective, person-centred care in a professional manner using appropriate nursing skills. Students will also demonstrate professionalism in both attitudes and values as well as in a positive attitude to their own learning. By engaging in PLE 3, students will be able to safely demonstrate the communication and relationship management skills and nursing procedures required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). In addition, students will be able to demonstrate that they have met European Union Directive 2005/36/EC for clinical instruction.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Participate in care at an independent level of performance.

2. Safely demonstrate each of the platform proficiencies at an independent level of performance.

3. Safely demonstrate a range of communication and relationship management skills and nursing procedures at an independent level of performance.

4. Reflect on the practice learning experience to inform future practice.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

■ Students must achieve at least a D grade for each practice learning placement (i.e., component of assessment).

■ Students must complete all required PLE3 practice learning placement hours.

■ Students must achieve all required platforms and proficiencies for this level of the programme.
