Short Description

In this practice-based course students will be assigned to three practice learning placements within a range of health and social care settings. In accordance with regulatory standards for pre-registration nurse education, Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018) student performance will be supported and assessed by nominated Practice Supervisors/Assessors and Academic Assessors. In each of the PLE 2 placements, students will work closely with a nominated Practice Supervisor who will direct and guide their participation in care at a developing independence level. Students will adhere to the "The Code. Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives, and nursing associates" (NMC, 2018) and local policies and procedures.

Assessment

The summative assessment process is in accordance with the regulatory standards for pre-registration nurse education, Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018). During each placement in PLE 2, students will work closely with a Practice Supervisor who will provide guidance and direction. The Practice Supervisor will work closely with a nominated Practice Assessor. Together, the Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor will discuss the student's performance in relation to each of the platform proficiencies. The outcome of this assessment will be documented in the student's Scottish Practice Assessment Document (PAD) before being reviewed and confirmed by the student's Academic Assessor.

Course Aims

This course aims to enhance the student's knowledge, skills, and proficiencies in clinical nursing practice in line with the Nursing & Midwifery Council's (2018) requirements. Through exposure to a variety of health and social care settings, students will build upon their practice learning experience from first year, becoming less dependent upon direct supervision from registered health and social care professionals. In addition, students will have an opportunity to practice some additional communication and relationship skills and nursing procedures which were not covered during their first-year practice learning experiences.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Participate in care at a developing independence level of performance.

2. Safely demonstrate each of the platform proficiencies at a developing independence level of performance.

3. Safely demonstrate a range of communication and relationship management skills and nursing procedures at a developing independence level of performance.

4. Use reflection on the practice learning experience to inform future practice
