Short Description
The course will equip students with the tools to communicate musicological knowledge and research to non-academic audiences. It will explore a range of formats (e.g. programme notes, blogging, podcasting) both through the study of existing examples and through practical, hands-on work.

Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ Introduce students to the principles, priorities and emergent theoretical models of the nascent field of Public Musicology/Public Music Theory
■ Equip the students with a range of writing, technical and critical tools to communicate musicological knowledge and research across different genres to non-academic audiences
■ Encourage reflection on the challenges of writing and speaking on musicological topics for non-academic audiences, and how such forms of writing and speaking might differ from those used in academic contexts
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Communicate musicological knowledge to non-academic audiences in accessible and clear language (written or spoken) while maintaining academic rigour
■ Identify and select secondary sources relevant to specific projects or pieces, interpreting and presenting them in ways accessible to non-academic audiences
■ Plan, design and execute a portfolio of Public Musicology pieces, exercising judgment in selecting topics, intended audiences, and format
■ identify opportunities (both self-directed and driven by external partners) to apply their musicological knowledge in pursuit of public engagement with music
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
