Short Description

This is a placement course designed to equip students with specialist skills and knowledge about teaching composition in a variety of education settings, ranging from early years to end of secondary level. As well as fostering the development of teaching skills, our students will reflect critically on teaching and learning approaches within the context of current policies on music education.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Foster graduate attributes including confidence, communication, and leadership.

■ Develop a critical awareness of current music education policy in Scotland.

■ Develop practical experience of communicating and interacting with students at secondary level.

■ Apply knowledge of a specialist discipline to the design of bespoke lesson plans.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Formulate effective lesson plans and activities that are informed by each student's personalised compositional practice.

■ Critically evaluate current educational policy on teaching and assessing music composition.

■ Reflect critically on own learning.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
