Short Description

The course will be a combination of theoretical and applied study of the global music industries. The first part will introduce and provide a theoretical grounding in the study of the three main music industries using a range of different themes and perspectives. The second will explore on a more specific and localised level, how these can be applied in a variety of countries and contexts.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Introduce students to the global music industries as part of the wider creative industries.

■ Problematise the nature of the global and local music industries using a range of sources in different countries.

■ Analyse the role of these industries in the production, dissemination, and consumption of music in different locations.

■ Discuss students' own engagement with and experience of these industries.

■ Develop students' presentation skills (verbal and written) in relation to the three major global music industries.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Research the global music industries using both existing and new / original sources.

■ Critically evaluate academic accounts of the music industries in their global and local contexts.

■ Apply key concepts such as creative industries, datafication, copyright, sustainability, and globalisation in relation to the global music industries.

■ Reflect critically upon their own and others' experience of the music industries in either the UK and /or beyond.

■ Present both in writing and orally on the key themes of, and specific local examples within, the global music industries.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
