Short Description

This course will examine the concept of the 'music city' and explore how this has been used and developed in cities around the world. The course will begin by locating the 'music city' within wider debates around creative cities, the creative industries, and associated policies. Having done this, it will focus on case studies of individual cities and allow students to conduct original research involving key stakeholders in a music city of their choice.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ explore the concept of a music city.

■ enhance understanding of the factors that contribute to a city's musical vitality, via its cultural institutions, policies, and social and economic networks.

■ investigate the role of music in driving social and cultural change within in urban environments.

■ appreciate the diversity of music cities in different countries and continents.

■ develop students' ability to effectively use written, and oral formats to discuss and critique music cities.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically evaluate the role of music in the social, economic, and cultural development of cities.

■ Identify ways in which music and music policy can contribute to the overall vibrancy of a city.

■ Analyse the challenges and opportunities faced by cities as they seek to use music to become more creative and competitive.

■ Evaluate the challenges and opportunities faced by different music cities.

■ Present their ideas and critiques of music cities and policies in written and oral formats.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
