Short Description
This course aims to help students develop a holistic understanding of the fundamentals of Human Resource Development through developing their ability to master the skills and knowledge necessary for training and developing people in and for the workplace. Key factors relating to, the way people learn at and through work and the factors which facilitate or impede these will be analysed and critically debated. Different approaches to workplace training, development, coaching and mentoring will be presented and examined. The course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to design, implement and evaluate learning interventions and strategies within a wide variety of workplace contexts. The use of data analytics to identify learning needs and evaluate L&D provision will also be explored.
Timetable
This course has been scheduled to run across the first six weeks of semester 2 with 27.5 face-to-face formal contact hours:
Week 1: 2 x 2 hour workshops (sessions 1 & 2) and 1 x 1 hour workshop (session 3)
Week 2: 2 x 2 hour workshops (sessions 1 & 2) and 1 x 1 hour workshop (session 3)
Week 3: 2 x 2 hour workshops (sessions 1 & 2) and 1 x 1 hour workshop (session 3)
Week 4: 2 x 2 hour workshops (sessions 1 & 2) and 1 x 1 hour workshop (session 3)
Week 5: 2 x 2 hour workshop (session 1), 1 x 1 hour workshop (session 2), and 1 x 2.5 hour workshop for presentations (session 3)
Week 6: 1 x 2 hour workshop for revision

Course Aims
The course aims to:
1. Develop students' knowledge and understanding of key issues relating to the nature of learning, knowledge, skills, training and workplace development.
2. Familiarise students with methods and tools common to learning needs analysis, and the development and evaluation of learning strategies and interventions.
3. Help students appreciate the individual and organisational importance of continued professional development and to understand the enablers and barriers to such learning.
4. Allow students to understand the specific needs and importance of developing managers and professionals with an international role.
5. Foster an understanding of the importance of coaching and mentoring in the work place and how to enact and develop this.
6. Encourage students' to develop the above within organisations ethically, professionally and in line with organisational needs and strategy.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse a wide number of different issues, theories and debates relating to the study of knowledge, learning skills, training and HRD in contemporary societies.
2. Evaluate different perspectives on and approaches to professional and leadership development in international contexts.
3. Assess learning needs and design, cost and deliver a learning intervention or strategy in line with organisational strategy, considering the importance of networking and collaborative relationship building.
4. Critically apply methods and tools common to the analysis, and evaluation of learning interventions appropriate to context.
5. Critically appraise the role of coaching and mentoring in the workplace.
6. Critically reflect on professional and ethical learning and practices in relation to their own employability and career aspirations.
7. Critically evaluate the role of data analytics as a learning and development tool in people management and appreciate how to use such data to gain insights into complex issues and to develop robust business cases for interventions.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
