Short Description

To allow students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to influence others successfully in a variety of work and social situations.

This course is delivered through a series of six sessions.

Assessment

The course will be assessed by way of a 3,500 word essay.

Course Aims

To allow students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully influence individuals and groups, in a variety of work and social situations.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course, students will have:

a) Distinguished different personality types and basis for influencing attempts;

b) Understood how people's needs can be harnessed so as to improve their influencing;

c) Understood the principles of giving and receiving constructive feedback;

d) Indentified their preferred influencing strategy;

e) Indentified and planned to extend their bases of power;

f) Understood how to influence a person's behaviour by using a 'management by consequences' approach;

g) Understood the basis of assertive behaviour;

h) Gained experience by influencing people through public speaking;

i) (i) Understood the principles of power-speaking.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

The minimum requirement for the award of credits is the submission of at least 75% by weight of the course's summative assessment (including any examinations). Further requirements may include monitored attendance at classes and examinations. All such requirements shall be specified by the Department concerned, and given to students in writing at the beginning of the course. Normally no grade or credits shall be awarded to a candidate who has not met these requirements.
