Short Description

This course provides the opportunity to complete a substantial piece of independent research in the field of infant mental health.

Assessment

Students complete a research dissertation of up to 6,000 words (or up to 8,000 words for qualitative projects) on a topic related to Infant Mental Health. (70%) (ILOs 1-8)

Poster presentation (30%) (ILOs 1, 2, 4, 5)

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to enable students to develop research skills relevant to undertaking research in the field of Infant Mental Health. Students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge that has been acquired throughout the MSc Infant Mental Health and Development programme to an area of research interest. The dissertation also aims to enable students to develop further their academic writing skills by producing a research paper that is suitable for submission for publication.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Formulate and critically evaluate infant mental health research questions and develop relevant research designs to answer these. 

2. Identify and appraise relevant literature using computerised information systems including electronic bibliographic databases and synthesise extracted data. 

3. Critically analyse infant mental health research data.

4. Critically appraise research designs based on their merits for use in infant mental health research in order to formulate their own research proposal.

5. Demonstrate oral presentation skills through the presentation of research progress, defend methods chosen and respond to suggestions for improvement from colleagues.

6. Work independently to reach research milestones and satisfactorily complete the research project.

7. Critically evaluate the scientific merits of their project work using a scientific style appropriate to the project topic.

8. Design a strategy for dissemination of research findings to appropriate audiences. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
