Students will have regular meetings with their project supervisor.

Requirements of Entry

Student who have achieved an average aggregation score of 12 (C3) in the taught courses associated with the MSc in Sport and Exercise Science & Medicine Programme, with at least 75% of the credits at Grade D3 or better

Assessment

Submission of a dissertation in the form of an original research project or similarly substantial piece of work prepared in an appropriate research output such as a journal article or research report (70% of Grade). Word count for output will be approximately 6000 words.

 

Viva examination including an oral presentation summarising dissertation and findings (30% of Grade)

Course Aims

To plan and execute an independent research project on a topic relevant to Sport and Exercise Science & Medicine and to present and discuss it's findings

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically assess and summarise the literature in the area of the research project

2. Identify an appropriate research question, demonstrating an understanding of the ethical and regulatory issues involved, and taking in to account resources (expertise, time, equipment, budget) available

3. Choose appropriate methods for data collection and/or analysis

4. Plan and carry out a research project

5. Carry out a defined group of practical skills. In laboratory projects these will include the use of certain apparatus and the appropriate handling of human subjects or tissues, or of animal preparations: in dry projects, the skills will be of information retrieval and handling

6. Analyse and interpret research data

7. Organise and present a research project, critically assessing the limitations of the project and the contribution it makes to current knowledge

8. Present research to peers in a concise, critical and clear talk

9. Defend their work in a viva examination
