Short Description

Students will integrate concepts of nutritional sciences, nutrition epidemiology and public health promotion into applied Public Health Nutrition. Evidence based approaches will be applied to plan and evaluate nutrition interventions.

Assessment

A group coursework/set exercise (65% to total assessment) consisting of a written report of approx. 2500 words (50%), an individual poster presentation (30%), an individual interview (20%). Covers ILO's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6.

 

A set exercise (35% of total assessment) consisting of a report of evidence on topic approx. 1000 words (30%), and an oral presentation (50%) with questions (20%). Covers ILO's 2 & 5.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

The group work aspect of assessment one cannot be resat.

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with specialisation:

Students who do not achieve a C3 or above on first sitting have one opportunity to re-sit any or all assessment components except that noted above. Students who fail to meet the minimum D3 threshold of a component, even if the overall C3 has been achieved, will have one opportunity to re-sit that component to meet the requirements of accreditation except that noted above.

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with Knowledge Transfer:

Students who do not achieve a C3 or above on first sitting have one opportunity to re-sit any or all assessment components except that noted above.

Course Aims

To provide students with the skills to obtain, and critically evaluate, the scientific evidence regarding aspects of public health nutrition

To provide students with the skills required to conduct a needs assessment and plan, implement and evaluate a nutrition intervention.
To provide students with the opportunity to work as a member of a project team

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

On completion of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Critically analyse and prioritise nutrition problems of public health significance and design implement and evaluate a needs assessment using an evidence based approach

2. Critically review and evaluate nutritional epidemiological studies

3. Identify and interpret nutritional monitoring and surveillance data with reference to the literature

4. Identify nutritionally vulnerable groups and ways to use existing channels of communication to target and monitor these vulnerable groups

5. Communicate effectively and present research evidence and ideas clearly in a style appropriate to a variety of different audiences using different media.

6. Work effectively in teams and project manage to complete complex tasks.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with specialisation:

As per the Association for Nutrition accreditation requirements students must submit all assessment components and achieve a minimum grade of D3 in each component.

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with Knowledge Transfer:

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
