This is a 3-week summer school in Critical Care, a week of which will take place in Glasgow at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Medical students from across the CIVIS group of universities can apply and will be selected to enrol. There will be 2 weeks of online learning where students will have access to pre-recorded lectures and videos related to Critical Care. This learning will be the knowledge foundation for the one-week face-to-face component that will take place on the Queen Elizabeth University Campus. On-campus there will be tutorials, interactive case-based discussions, simulations and bedside teaching.
There will also be a social programme associated with the summer school introducing European students to Scottish and Glaswegian culture. The social programme will improve connections amongst students and foster a collaborative spirit moving forward.

Assessment
Multiple Choice Test
Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
Course Aims
The aims of the course are to consolidate and enhance students' knowledge and skills in relation to the field of Critical Care in a relaxed environment, and to provide an environment where education and sociocultural aspects, including that of clinical practice, are exchanged amongst students and amongst academic staff.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Describe critical illness and the role of the Critical Care department in looking after critically ill patients
2. Discuss common causes of Critical Care including sepsis
3. Discuss a range of strategies and therapeutic interventions available to support patients who are critically ill
4. Demonstrate some aspects of caring for critically ill patients in a simulated setting
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
