Short Description

The course introduces students to key concepts in the study of Latin language and familiarises students with basic features of Latin grammar and syntax.

Timetable

Lectures: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays at 9am over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly one hour seminar (choice of times) over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Study key concepts in the Latin language,

■ Introduce basic features of Latin grammar and syntax,

■ Provide a basic Latin vocabulary,

■ Enable the comprehension and translation into English simple Latin sentences,

■ Enable the translation from English into correct Latin single words and brief phrases.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply their knowledge of basic Latin grammar, morphology and syntax, and specified Latin vocabulary,

■ Translate simple sentences from Latin into idiomatic English

■ Answer questions about the forms of Latin words used in simple Latin sentences.

■ Supply the correct forms of individual Latin words and simple phrases.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
