This course will allow students to undertake a substantial piece of individual work in digital media, involving planning, specification, design, execution, evaluation, and written and visual presentation. Students will produce their individual project alongside a piece of academic writing contextualizing their project and discussing its relevance in the context of their curriculum and a relevant professional arena.

Regular supervision sessions will take place during the year with an appointed supervisor.

Successful completion of Junior Honours in Digital Media and Information Studies and completion of Junior Honours Applied Dissertation with Placement core course (GENERAL9129).

There are three summative assessments: a business case, the digital project, and an academic write-up.

■ The business case will outline the proposed project, identifying a problem, analysing possible solutions, recommending one solution, and outlining the proposed activity. (2,000 words - 20%)

■ A digital tool or resource reflecting 200 hours of effort (50%)

■ Academic write-up incorporating: (1) a user guide; (2) a discussion of any critical and theoretical frameworks and/or any editorial practices that have been employed; and (3) an analysis of the project considering the challenges identified in the business case. (3,000 words - 30%):

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course aims to:

■ engage students to develop an individual project applying digital skills;

■ build students' project management, planning, and time-management skills for creating and completing digital projects;

■ develop students' capacity for independent work and writing;

■ engage students with practical knowledge of the chosen area of skills development/relevant professional arena;

■ develop Graduate Attributes through the practical application of technical skills and thereby directly enhance graduate employability

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ manage and organise a large independent piece of work;

■ discuss and evaluate, at an advanced level, technologies, tools and approaches, and apply them effectively;

■ write a coherent and convincing business case for the project that identifies a problem, analyses alternative solutions, recommends a solution, and outlines proposed activity;

■ synthesize learned technical skills appropriately to address a single challenging problem;

■ plan and implement an efficient programme for developing an independent digital project in digital media;

■ incorporate relevant critical and theoretical approaches to analyse and evaluate the work.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
