Short Description

Multimedia has major implications for the way in which we access and use information. It enables different types and levels of information to be contained within one application so suit different audiences and can provide new possibilities for engagement. This course focuses on the principles pertaining to the design, creation, structure, presentation and evaluation of multimedia resources, such as a web site.

1x1hr lecture; 1x1hr computer lab per week over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

Requirements of Entry

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Digital Media and Information Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes who qualify under the University's 25% regulation.

Assessment

The assessment consists of 100% portfolio comprising:

 

1. Mini portfolio (20%) in Week 4 or 5 showcasing

■ Lab work for the first two weeks

■ Debate topic proposal (750 words)

 

2. Final portfolio (80%) in Week 11 or 12 showcasing

■ Finalised weekly lab work from the course - 48% of the final grade (= 60% of the final portfolio)

■ Design proposal for multimedia presentation in the chosen topic area (1500 words +/- 10%) - 32% of the final grade (= 40% of the final portfolio)

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Explore theoretical design principles for creating and critically evaluating multimedia work;

■ Develop visual and aural based skills and perceptions to understand and appraise multimedia developments.

■ Acquire analytical and practical skills to design and to construct multimedia presentations, such as web sites.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

■ Appraise critically the quality of multimedia projects using methods grounded in principles of design theory;

■ use multimedia computing in a visually & aurally literate way;

■ Explain the process for defining, prototyping a multimedia project;

■ Use a range of multimedia technologies (such web technologies).

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
