Short Description
This course is intended to develop general linguistic ability in German with a clear emphasis on oral/aural communication. It provides an introduction, in theory and in practice, to aspects of interpreting.

Requirements of Entry
Confirmed acceptance on to either the German Honours or Level 3 programmes.
Assessment
Continuous Assessment (33.33%) - A continuous assessment mark for participation (assessed internally by tutors based on the quality of participation in class) in the Liaison Interpreting tutorial will form 33.33% of the Degree Examination mark.
Degree Examination (66.66%) - The assessment of this course will be by practical examination of c. 15 minutes conducted by internal examiners at the end of Semester 2.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
Course Aims
- to familiarise students with the essential skills involved in interpreting and to give them some practice and experience in these skills
- to introduce students to the theory of interpreting
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- translate, in speech, conversation/dialogue fluently and accurately from English into German and from German into English
- take notes and to summarise extended pieces of spoken discourse in the other language
- apply the theory of interpreting encountered during the course to their practice.
In addition students will also develop transferable skills such as the ability to:
- express views clearly, concisely and confidently and to listen carefully to others
- work effectively on one's own and with others on a common task
- manage resources, setting targets for tasks and meeting them by a given deadline
- adapt skills so that the results of any task undertaken are of a high standard
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
