Short Description

This course is a Gaelic language immersion course which can be taken as part of a pre Gaelic with Immersion MA hons programme. The course will study contemporary Gaelic literature and culture and will develop oral competency in the Gaelic language.

Timetable

7 x 1 hour seminars per week over 20 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus. 

Requirements of Entry

Grade C3 or above in Gaelic 2 Advanced (GAELIC2001) or Gaelic 2 Intermediate (GAELIC2003).

Assessment

Two x 10 minute oral presentations in Gaelic -20%

Two x 15 minute oral exams -30%

10 listening and comprehension exercises -20%

Portfolio of 10 oral digital artefacts -30%

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Increase fluency in Gaelic

■ Provide students with an opportunity to become more accurate and articulate in spoken Gaelic

■ Develop in students an appreciation of the variety of Gaelic dialectal styles and registers in spoken communication

■ Increase students' familiarity with the varied forms of contemporary Gaelic literature and history, Gaelic song and Gaelic culture

■ Encourage the development of transferable skills by fostering individual research, presentation and self-reflection initiatives

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Communicate effectively, confidently and precisely in spoken Gaelic, in a range of registers.

■ Present pieces of sustained prose in Gaelic on a range of contemporary issues.

■ Present confidently in Gaelic on subjects of their choice.

■ Present a portfolio of digital artefacts on contemporary and historical issues.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
