Short Description

This compulsory core course of the MEd and MSc TESOL offers an overview of two key approaches approaches to describing language in context and considers how this is relevant to the language learning classroom. The course focuses on approaches to discourse analysis, descriptions of lexico-grammatical features and of aspects of phonology and phonetics.

Timetable

2 hours per week. 10 x 1 hour lecture, 10 x 1 hour seminar . 1 x 2 hour workshop (week 8 of course). Completion of online tasks throughout the semester (total 36 hours - 3 a week)

Assessment

Written assignment of 2 short assignments: Assignment 1 in two parts. Part 1: discourse 1,000 words; 25% of course grade. Part 2: syntax and lexis 2,000 words; 50% of course grade. Assignment 2 of one part. Part 3: written assignment on phonetics and phonology 1,000 words = 25%

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills to analyse language in a range of contexts, spoken and written and apply the knowledge to their teaching in the classroom.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to:

 

identify and differentiate between varieties of spoken and written registers and genres

describe a range of lexico-grammatical features within different registers and genres

explain how meaning is created through particular linguistic selections

apply descriptions of language use for pedagogic purposes

make use of text corpora for linguistic analysis

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment.
