Short Description

To promote an awareness of inclusive curricula design and educational approaches that support equality of access for museum visitors with diverse sets of needs .

To promote an understanding of theory and research into museum access and inclusion and of the implications for practice.

Timetable

This will be a 5 week campus course of 2 hour seminars each week.

Assessment

The A&I assignment will be 100% case study of a museum of choice for a particular audience group e.g. older adults, young people with autism etc.: 2000 words.

Students will identify a museum or heritage site of choice analyse how it promotes and facilitates accessibility and inclusivity for a particular audience group, drawing on relevant literature, policy and research.  

Course Aims

■ This course aims to extend theoretical knowledge of issues that restrict access to museum spaces and collections for visitors with diverse learning needs.

■ This course aims to extend understanding of educational approaches and resources that support inclusivity and access for museum visitors with diverse needs. Participant and audience diversity will be examined in light of current and emerging policy at local, national and global levels.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

LO1 Identify and critically analyse the factors that contribute to restricting and enabling intellectual, cultural, physical and gender-specific access to museum.

 

LO2 Critically analyse relevant policy, literature, research and practice to inform and extend understanding of appropriate inclusive museum approaches, resources and contexts.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
