Short Description
As part of their role, healthcare professionals (HCPs) are likely to teach students, trainees, peers and/or other HCPs. Even where they have considerable experience in teaching or otherwise facilitating learning, they may not be knowledgeable about the evidence-base for their teaching practice. Moreover, even where HCPs are familiar with clinical research, they may be unfamiliar with the criteria against which the evidence base for their teaching practice is judged.
Timetable
10 teaching weeks with a study week in the middle (5 + 1 + 5; standard UoG ODL structure)
Content will include:
■ Myths in education
■ The nature of evidence in education
■ Searching for the evidence
■ Critical appraisal of education literature
■ Case studies of evidence debunking myths
Requirements of Entry
Applicants should normally possess a medical, dental, or nursing degree from an institution recognised by the University Court; or a recognised degree from another appropriate healthcare profession; they should ideally be employed in a relevant professional context. Applications will also be considered from individuals with other relevant degree qualifications (such as a BSc in a biomedical science), who are, or aspire to be, employed in the education of healthcare professionals.
Applicants to the associated programmes (section 10) who undertake this specific course in Evidence-Based Teaching (EBT) must also have completed the Teaching in Healthcare Professions (THCP) micro-credentialing course offered by the University of Glasgow; a pass at D3 or better is required.
