Education in Practice 5 is a masters level course of professional education for teachers. It is designed to extend the knowledge and understanding of students by engaging with a selected range of contemporary theory, research and practice. This course is designed to allow emerging teachers to critically engage with a selected range of academic elements aligned with key areas of career-long professional learning as articulated by Scotland's Standard for Career-Long Professional Learning. The course will engage with a defined selection of aspects drawn from, for example, pedagogy, learning and subject knowledge, curriculum and assessment, educational contexts and current debates in policy, education and practice and learning for sustainability. Areas of professional learning will be studied in common with students from other sectors or subject backgrounds appropriate to the shared nature of aspects of the Standard common to all teachers. Students will extend their critical awareness in relation to current issues and developments in theory and practice. The course will engage with a specific range of questions and concerns covering current policy and practice, pedagogy, scholarship and research related to their own domains and future practice. This course will provide opportunities for students to reflect on professional values and their personal commitment.

Mandatory Entry Requirements

D3 in Education in Practice 4 or D3 in Education in Practice (Secondary) 4 or equivalent courses in teacher education at level 10.

Visiting or Erasmus students must be qualified teachers in a recognised jurisdiction.

This course will be assessed by means of a written assignment (weighting 70% around 4,000 words) and a form of project task (weighting 30%).

Education in Practice 5 is designed to extend students' professional knowledge and understanding. A clearly articulated range of professional knowledge, understanding and skills are addressed within the framework provided by Scotland's Standard for Career-Long Professional Learning. For example, learning will range across and focus on current debates in policy, education and practice together with aspects of pedagogy, learning and subject knowledge, curriculum and assessment, educational contexts and learning for sustainability. This course requires students to engage with current theory, research and practice. It demands that emerging teachers develop criticality and demonstrate sensitivity to arguments, values, theory, research and evidence and to the multiple demands of policy.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Explain and critically analyse concepts and approaches associated with contemporary thinking across areas selected from within the framework provided by Scotland's Standard for Career-Long Professional Learning.

2. Assess and make critical use of relevant scholarship and research around contemporary issues impacting on policy and practice.

3. Critically evaluate and make connections between their field of practice and the demands and challenges inherent within the wider policy context.

4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and debates related to their own domain of practice.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
