Short Description
This course is one component in the overall award of the Catholic Teacher's Certificate in Religious Education, which qualifies students to teach religious education in the Catholic school sector: either as a class teacher in the Catholic primary school, or as a generalist teacher of RE in the Catholic secondary.

Requirements of Entry
Admission to the PGDE programme at the School of Education at the University of Glasgow.
A declaration of commitment to the Catholic school ethos and a supporting priest reference is also required for the award of the Catholic Teacher's Certificate in Religious Education.

Assessment
Summative assessment for the course consists of a written portfolio submitted at the end of each semester. The tasks cover theological knowledge and application to educational contexts, as appropriate. Each submission will be around 1500 words.
Course Aims
■ To ensure depth of understanding in the key components and theological insights of Catholic Christianity
■ To enable students to reflect on the vocation of the Catholic teacher as catechist and educator.
■ To contribute to an M-level route into teaching that provides a practical and theoretical foundation to the development of learning and teaching in Catholic denominational education.
■ To produce creative teachers who enjoy and excel in the privileges of working with children and young people who attend Catholic schools.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students should be able to:
■ Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key theological insights and pedagogical approaches.
■ Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of Catholic doctrine, faith and morals in light of Scripture, Tradition and liturgy.
■ Where appropriate, demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
■ Demonstrate an understanding of the distinctive nature and mission of the Catholic school.
■ Engage with key Scripture and relevant Church documents to enhance understanding and faith development.
■ Develop those values which underpin Catholic Education - justice, respect, wisdom, honesty, care, kindness, charity and sensitivity to the needs of others.
■ Demonstrate an ability to plan, implement and evaluate coherent and progressive Catholic Religious Education lessons and programmes, and where required, within a CfE framework
■ Wherever possible and appropriate, actively contribute to the liturgical events, charitable works and overall mission of the school.
■ Develop professional practice through observation, reflection, evaluation and enquiry.
