Short Description
By successfully completing School Experience, students will demonstrate competence in meeting the Standard for Provisional Registration.
Timetable
The pattern of school experience is designed to meet the requirements of the 2006 Guidelines for Initial Teacher Education Courses in Scotland which require that at least 18 weeks of the programme must be devoted to School Experience and that the final block should be at least 4 weeks.
The 18 weeks of school placement are broken down as follows:
Primary
Weeks 5 - 6 (primary 4 - 7)
Weeks 9 - 16 (primary 4 - 7)
Weeks 24 - 29 (primary 1 - 3)
Weeks 35 - 40 (primary 4 - 7)
Secondary
Weeks 5 - 6
Weeks 11 - 16

3 x School Experience Placements
Course Aims
The school experience placements provide opportunities for students to develop and enact the forms of knowledge, skills and values explored throughout the overall PGDE programme in a practical, professional setting.
This course for students to:
■ Develop as engaged, reflective, empowered and enquiring teachers for children and young people aged 3-18 in accordance with the criteria articulated in The Standard for Provisional Registration (GTCS, August 2021).
■ Apply evidence-based knowledge and understanding of relevant curriculum areas, age-appropriate, subject-appropriate and inclusive pedagogies into classroom practice.
■ Critically reflect on the ways in which personal and professional values shape teaching practice.
Develop critical understandings of current curriculum, policy and practice.
■ Understand their role in constructing effective and inclusive teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation.
■ Understand the link between effective teaching and learning, children's attainment, achievement, and wellbeing, and the extent and scope of their role as the teacher.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will:
■ Demonstrate an in-depth and critically reflective knowledge of Scottish curriculum policy, guidance and advice.
■ Demonstrate independent planning and implementation of educationally effective and coherent teaching and learning in relevant areas of the curriculum.
■ Create safe, inclusive and welcoming classrooms which support pupils' emotional, social, and intellectual needs.
■ Demonstrate the professional values, professional knowledge and understanding and professional skills and abilities necessary for the Standards for Provisional Registration in Scotland.
■ Identify ways to improve practice through cycles of evaluation and reflection and demonstrate use of these in practice.
Where appropriate, develop an understanding of the nature of Catholic schools and the role of the teacher within this context.
