Short Description
Education in Practice is where educational theory and practice combine. Key educational themes are pursued across each of the four years with increasing demand and complexity as the degree progresses. Education in Practice 2A explores aspects of initial teacher education, literature on effective learning and teaching and a range of key professional issues are considered through the introduction of curriculum theory, exploration of pedagogical perspectives and teacher identity.

Assessment
This course will be assessed by means of a 1500 word written assignment to demonstrate the student's understanding of how educational and curriculum theory relates to practice.
Course Aims
The aim of this course is to introduce students to core material in the area of curriculum theories to develop critical and reflective skills through reading, writing and discussion. It explores the dynamic relationships between the development of a curriculum, the evaluation of a curriculum, a curriculum in action (including pedagogy) and the assessment of a curriculum. This course also introduces how teachers build their own professional identity through lifelong professional development and reflective practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Explore curriculum theories from political, cultural, historical and religious perspectives
2. Examine how curriculum theories impact on curriculum design
3. Evaluate how curriculum design can influence teacher identity and professional practice, in particular the planning of lessons
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course summative assessment. Students must have an 80% attendance at lectures and seminars.
