Short Description

Education in Practice is where educational theory and practice combine. Key educational themes are pursued across each of the four years with increasing demand and complexity as the degree progresses. Education in Practice 1B introduces some foundational knowledge on theories of child development with a focus on how preschool and infant school children learn in different developmental domains. It engages students in collaborative learning activities in a range of contexts to support their engagement with professional learning and practice.

Assessment

This course will be assessed by means of a portfolio and an online test which demonstrates the student's understanding of how child development and educational and learning theory relates to practice.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding of children's development and learning theory in order to explore and reflect on the decisions teachers make when planning learning experiences for children. This course introduces aspects of the learning and teaching cycle to prepare for school experience in early years and infant school education.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Identify and explain selected pedagogical perspectives of learning in relation to child cognitive development and learning theory

2. Engage with the learning and teaching cycle with specific reference to assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation

3. Reflect on the professional values and commitments as indicated in the University Fitness to Practice Code and the GTCS Student Code

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. Students must have an 80% attendance at lectures and seminars and 90% attendance on School Experience Placements.
