Short Description
Education in Practice is where educational theory and practice combine. Key educational themes are pursued across each of the four years with increasing demand and complexity as the degree progresses. Education in Practice 1A introduces students to foundational aspects of initial teacher education. Literature on effective learning and teaching and a range of key professional issues are considered, through the introduction of theories of learning, pedagogical perspectives, professional identity, values and Standard for Provisional Registration. The importance of reflective professional learning is introduced as students examine their own historical ontology and begin to critique their own development as learners.
Timetable
A blend of lectures and seminars. Typically 1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour seminar weekly.

Assessment
This course will be assessed by means of a written assignment, including an essay and an online test which demonstrates the student's understanding of how educational and learning theory relates to practice.

Course Aims
The aim of this course is to introduce students to core material in the area of education and learning theories to develop critical, analytical and reflective skills through reading, writing and discussion. Students will have opportunities to challenge personal assumptions, values and beliefs about learning and education as well as make connections between learning theories and their own development as a learner through personal and professional reflection.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Explore theories of learning and cognition
2. Describe the social, political and cultural influences upon learners and learning
3. Identify how previous learning can shape personal and professional identity and values
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course summative assessment. Students must have an 80% attendance at lectures and seminars.
