Short Description

This course gives Level 3 students from across the College of Arts the opportunity to develop writing skills which will be useful to you in employment. You will be encouraged to express your subject-specific knowledge in forms and styles which appeal to readers outside the University.

Timetable

One 1-hour lecture per week and one x 2-hour seminar per week as scheduled on MyCampus.

Requirements of Entry

A grade of D3 or above in any level 2 course offered by the College of Arts.

Assessment

One portfolio consisting of 6-8 pieces of original written work, totalling 4,500-5,500 words (100%).

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ Develop your writing skills with a focus on writing for employability

■ Give you practice in writing in different styles and forms

■ Encourage you to express your subject-specific knowledge in ways which will appeal to readers outside academia

■ Work with students and staff from a range of subject areas and disciplines.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Express detailed subject-specific knowledge in a variety of genres and styles to appeal to readers outside the University

■ Select an appropriate genre and style for a given writing task

■ Offer constructive comments on their own and others' writing

■ Edit their own and others' writing in the light of feedback received

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
