Short Description
The overall aim of Pedagogy and Practice in the Secondary STEM Curriculum is to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities required for professional practice in secondary schools. The course will promote an understanding of pedagogy to support STEM subject learning, teaching, and assessment in the secondary classroom. Students will be equipped to examine their own professional practice, policy issues, and the wider education system.

Assessment
Portfolio (50%) - create a 4-5 LEP sequence of 60-minute lessons and write a 1000-word rationale to describe and justify your assessment approaches. (ILOs 1 & 2)
Presentation (50%) - In a 15-minute presentation, evaluate the quality of your planned teaching sequence using the academic literature to support and justify your main points. Discuss your approaches to the planned teaching programme with your tutor group and lecturer (ILO 3)
Course Aims
The aims of this course are:
1. To develop students' pedagogical and professional practice knowledge and skills to enable them to deliver high-quality learning and teaching in secondary STEM education contexts.
2. To develop students' capacity to assess children and young people's progress in STEM education contexts to ensure that they can maximise attainment and contribute to equitable outcomes for all learners.
3. To develop students' knowledge of and ability to critically evaluate key policies and curriculum developments to enable them to improve their own professional practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Plan and implement coherent and progressive teaching programmes offering young people authentic learning experiences in secondary STEM subjects which will enrich their learning and contribute to their personal development.
2. Apply appropriate strategies for assessing, recording and reporting on learners' progress, attainment and next steps, to meet the needs of all learners and maximise equitable educational outcomes.
3. Reflect on key policies and curriculum developments for secondary STEM subjects to evaluate and continually improve professional practice.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. Students must achieve 12 (C3) or above overall in course assessment.
