This intensive one week field course will introduce students to cultural and natural tourism approaches within a specific, place-based setting. The objectives of the course are to provide students with the opportunity to consider sustainable tourism approaches and impacts through first-hand experience of the multifarious practices and complex processes involved in the implementation and management of tourism sites, as well as cultural and natural heritage communication and site interpretation.

Course will run over three weeks: One week, residential intensive field course at location, one teaching preparatory workshop held on the Dumfries Campus and/or online in the week before departure, and a debriefing session following the fieldtrip.

To enrol on this course students are required to have completed DUMF5143 Sustainable Tourism.

1. Oral Presentation (20%): Students will be required to work in groups to prepare and deliver a 'tour guide' style presentation while on location, identifying the issues encountered at the site in relation to sustainable tourism. (ILO1, ILO4)

2. Site Report (3,500 words, 80%): Students will be required to examine a visited field site and undertake an assessment of the implementation of tourism within the field site based on the principles of sustainable tourism. (ILO2, ILO3)

The aims of this course are to:

1. Engage students in the practical application of theory and concepts relating to sustainable tourism

2. Introduce students to examples of location-based sustainable tourism currently being implemented within the tourism industry

3. Enhance students' ability to assess complex, real world problems and propose solutions

4. Enhance students' ability to coherently communicate information from a real world scenario

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge relating to sustainable tourism, through the examination of a specific setting

2. Identify and evaluate different approaches to sustainable tourism

3. Propose strategic directions to stakeholders regarding sustainable tourism planning and development

4. Communicate information relating to the implementation of sustainable tourism principles within field sites 

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.

Students must participate in the whole field course unless excused due to notification of good cause.
