Short Description

The course aims to provide the postgraduate student with academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable them to develop their skills in diagnosing endodontic problems and to provide appropriate treatment to endodontic patients. During the course, students will learn the impact of endodontic disease and how teeth lost due to endodontic failure can be replaced.

This course is made up of tutorials, seminars and practical classes that take place over the summer semester.

End of course multiple short answer written examination (30%) - ILO 1,2 ,3, 4

2,000 word assignment essay (50%) - ILO 5

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide the postgraduate with academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable them to assess the needs, treatment options, and organise appropriate immediate and subsequent treatment for patients with failed endodontic treatment resulting in tooth loss

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the aetiology and epidemiology of root resorption.  

2. Critically appraise treatment options of root resorption. 

3. Critically evaluate common problems associated with the loss of teeth.  

4. Critically discuss management strategies for the replacement of missing teeth including implants and the associated risks/benefits.  

5. Critically evaluate the literature pertaining to the management of teeth with guarded/hopeless prognoses and subsequent tooth loss.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment as well as pass the clinical skills competencies.
