Short Description

This course will develop the students' critical understanding of the different methodologies and approaches used by researchers of a scientific and clinical background in subject areas allied to oral sciences. Students will critically examine research techniques employed in a variety of medical research disciplines and investigate how they can be used to enhance clinical medicine.

5 minute assessed oral presentation - 20% - ILO 1, 2, 3

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the methodologies and approaches used by the biomedical researchers in subjects allied to oral sciences.

 

Students will be immersed in the different elements of biomedical research, which will develop their proficiency in the analysis and the evaluation of the data from the literature within the area of translational research approaches in oral sciences.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the different research approaches available to scientists and clinicians to test different scientific hypotheses.

2. Communicate effectively with scientists and clinicians on matters relating to translational medical science methodologies.

3. Critically reflect upon the processes involved in bench to chairside innovation through evaluation of up-to-date scientific data presented within the literature.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
