Short Description

The course aims to develop a knowledge base required for assessing the needs of patients with endodontic disease and will also help students to develop skills in the treatment planning and delivery of appropriate immediate and subsequent treatment. Students will be exposed to a range of clinical and technical skills pertinent to the technical and clinical stages requisite to such treatment.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable students to demonstrate a critical understanding of the biological basis of endodontic disease as well as to able to diagnose endodontic problems and develop appropriate treatment plans.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Describe and evaluate the anatomy of pulp and periradicular tissues.   

2. Describe and evaluate the aetiology and biological processes underpinning pulp and periradicular pathoses. 

3. Describe and evaluate the sequelae of endodontic diseases and their management including pain and infection.  

4. Describe and evaluate the importance of pulpal protection and prevention of endodontic diseases.  

5. Critically evaluate the theoretical basis of endodontic diagnosis including special investigations and development of treatment plans.  

6. Critically evaluate the literature pertaining to aetiology of key pathoses in endodontic disease.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment as well as pass the clinical skills competencies.
