Short Description

This Masters course gives students the opportunity individually, or through collaboration with one or more fellow students, to produce a project or creative work that develops their skills and understanding of a genre or form (eg. transposition, adaptation, performance); or to produce paper and/or web selections and editions of editorial work; or to explore issues of agenting, publishing or book retailing.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Enable students to apply knowledge of publishing and the culture of reception to an Editorial Project they design in consultation with the course convenor;

■ Provide students the opportunity to work singly or through collaboration with one or more fellow students to produce a project or creative work or that develops his or her skills and understanding of a genre or form, e.g. transposition, adaptation, performance etc;

■ Enable students to produce paper and/or web selections and editions of creative or editorial work;

■ Enable students to capitalise on contacts with professional writers/publishers/agents/translators/festival organizers and various others who work in the book industry via their Editorial Project.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Formulate and implement a project relating to textual transmission;

■ Apply specific editorial skills (formal and stylistic) to their selected project;

■ Analyse and explain various roles and tasks in the editing and publish industry;

■ Work with a range of literary texts, not as a creative writer but as a publisher, editor, or translator.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
