Short Description

The aims of this module are: to develop the linguistic skills gained during the introductory Early Gaelic course; to allow students to apply these skills to edited medieval texts; to explore textual, literary and linguistic issues arising from the texts; to provide a good familiarity with the forms and development of Early Gaelic verse.

Assessment

The mark for this module will be determined on the basis of: 5% class preparation and class participation; 20% in-class translation and grammar exercise, to be done in seventh week; 25% one written essay on literary or textual aspects of the texts read; 50% a two-hour degree examination.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

The aims of this module are: to develop the linguistic skills gained during the introductory Early Gaelic course; to allow students to apply these skills to edited medieval texts; to explore textual, literary and linguistic issues arising from the texts; to provide a good familiarity with the forms and development of Early Gaelic verse.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this module, the student should be able: to demonstrate a good understanding of the background, meaning and literary significance of the texts read; to translate passages of Old Irish poetry; to show a good familiarity with Early Gaelic metrical forms; to apply knowledge of Old Irish poetry to unseen passages.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
