Short Description
This course provides students with intensive Hungarian language tuition over 2 semesters of study. The course is taught to enable students to acquire sufficient linguistic knowledge and translation skills to be able to read social science texts in the original language and to use these in their study of social science disciplines. At the end of the course the students will have attained the necessary competence in Hungarian in order to use original language sources competently with the help of a dictionary, so that they can undertake more advanced research programmes or employment in the field of Central and East European Studies.
Timetable
Classes will normally be 4 hours per weeks at times to be arranged
Requirements of Entry
As per entry requirements for degree programme - 2.1 honours degree or equivalent.
Assessment
The summative assessment will consist of a two-hour written paper, comprising grammar, comprehension and translation elements (worth 70%), and a short oral examination requiring the reading of a short text and general conversation (worth 30%).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
· read and translate standard social science texts with the use of a dictionary;
· write a full summary in English of a Hungarian-language social science text;
· conduct an everyday conversation in Hungarian and give a brief, basic presentation about their research;
· make effective use of dictionaries and other reference sources;
· follow a basic oral presentation in Hungarian of social science topics.
