Short Description

This course introduces epidemiology, prevention and control of infectious diseases. The focus of the course is on a multidisciplinary practical One Health approach applied to effectively prevent and control infectious diseases.

Assessment

Students will complete one written and one oral assessment:

 

1. Case study (50%). The maximum word count for this assignment will not exceed 2500 words. This assessment maps to all ILOs.

2. Presentation (50%). The duration of this oral assessment will not exceed 12 minutes. This assessment maps to all ILOs.

Course Aims

This course aims to introduce approaches used to gain an understanding of disease epidemiology, and how to use this understanding to prevent and control infectious diseases. The focus of the course is on a multidisciplinary practical One Health approach to achieve prevention and control.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Evaluate and assess methods of surveillance, prevention, and control of infectious disease. 

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of host-pathogen interactions and apply this understanding to critically discuss, plan and design prevention and control measures.

3. Appraise the importance of the multidisciplinary nature of infectious disease prevention and control, and how such interventions inform policy and practice.

4. Gain a critical understanding of the importance of cultural factors and household context that determine the outcome of disease prevention and control measures.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
