Short Description

This course will equip students with knowledge in basic tissue pathology in cancer, tissue histopathology techniques and governance in human tissue research. Student will learn how to identify tumour cell structures and to understand the theory behind various pathology techniques. They will also learn about different model systems and how they are utilized in research.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to basics in tumour pathology and how to identify key components of the tumour and stroma tissue. Students will also learn both theoretical and practical aspects of histology such as haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridisation (ISH).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the theory and practical aspects of histology techniques such as H&E, IHC and ISH

2. Describe the cellular components of tumour and the tumour microenvironment and be able to identify them

3. Critique different model systems in research and when to use them

4. Demonstrate practical histology techniques

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
