Short Description
This course is aimed at intermediate speakers who would like to become more confident in the use of the language as well as develop their sociocultural knowledge. The focus of the course is on language practice through a variety of relevant topics, from current affairs to literature, films, art and history but also covering appropriate intermediate language content. You will have the opportunity to interact with others and participate in discussions in topical areas, linking stretches of language to communicate effectively, increasing, at the same time, your cultural competence and awareness of the areas where the language is spoken.
During this course, you will be working at levels B1+/B2 of the Common European Framework.

Requirements of Entry
This course is recommended for learners who are independent users of the language and want to further develop their skills, having completed an Intermediate course or reached, at least, B1+ level.

Assessment
Practical skills tasks evaluating students' competence on how well productive oral (25%) and writing (25%) skills are performed.
Set exercises designed as questions or tasks intended to assess the application of knowledge in receptive listening (25%) and reading (25%) skills in the language.
Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ Provide relevant sociocultural materials permitting an insight into customs, usages, attitudes, values and beliefs;
■ Enable learners to interact with others with a degree of fluency through the exploration of culturally relevant topics;
■ Develop language skills to be able to recognise and explain viewpoints on topical issues giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options;
■ Encourage learners to produce connected text on a variety of sociocultural subjects.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Demonstrate intercultural awareness and competence, and appreciate differences with own culture;
■ Communicate with some confidence in topical issues, exchanging, checking and confirming information;
■ Listen and identify factual information, general messages and specific detail on relevant sociocultural topics;
■ Recognise the line of argument and main conclusions in a variety of texts;
■ Write straightforward, connected texts on a range of topical subjects.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 74% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
