Short Description

Glasgow has many outstanding paintings in public collections. Many of these works are world famous, from Kelvingrove's Christ of St John on the cross by Salvador Dali, to the numerous works found within the Burrell collection such as The Chateau of Medan by Paul Cezanne. This course will introduce the key collections, their histories, and a selection of their works. The course will consist of a series of lectures followed by visits to three collections, the Burrell, Kelvingrove and the Hunterian.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Introduce the art collections found in Glasgow and place them with their historical and cultural contexts

■ Present the key paintings and artists found within the respective collections

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Identify key artists and paintings found in art collections in Glasgow

■ Place the collections within their cultural and historical contexts

■ Analyse and interpret the paintings covered in terms of their imagery, style and social and historical context

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
