Short Description

This course examines the Dead Sea Scrolls in their historical and social setting. We will discuss the religious ideas within the Scrolls and the ways in which the Scrolls shed light on the development of Judaism and early Christianity. The course includes short lectures, group discussions and close readings of selected texts.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Provide students with the opportunity to study the Dead Sea Scrolls in their historical and social context

■ Introduce students to key religious ideas expressed in the Scrolls.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Identify the key religious ideas within the Dead Sea Scrolls.

■ Evaluate the contribution of the Scrolls to the development of Judaism and early Christianity.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
