This course provides an introduction to some of the world's major art collections. Each week will be devoted to one city and its art collections and these will include London's Courtauld Gallery and Wallace Collection, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Prado in Madrid, Vienna's Kunsthistorishes Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

No summative assessments will be undertaken.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

■ To provide an introduction to the history of the selected art collections.

■ To study in detail individual major works in each collection.

■ To set the paintings within the broader historical, cultural and social developments of their time.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate familiarity with the art within each collection.

■ Analyse the sources to contextualise the history of the formation of each collection.

■ Interpret and discuss with confidence how the paintings of the selected artists were influenced by previous masters and how their art influenced future generations of artists.
