Short Description

This course offers an introduction to the main aspects and concerns in contemporary Scottish fiction. Texts to be studied will be three novels and short story collections.

Assessment

One essay of 1750 words. Students will be asked to compare the ways in which two of the three main course texts engage with important aspects of contemporary Scottish fiction.

Course Aims

This course aims to introduce students to major aspects of contemporary Scottish fiction, drawing on material from both the Scottish novel and the short story.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Write about important topics in selected texts in contemporary Scottish prose fiction.

■ Identify and illustrate the ways in which selected texts make use of specific elements of Scottish culture and history.

■ Write lucidly and with confidence on some of the issues raised in contemporary Scottish writing.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
